The public theatre of Bengal has crossed the milestone of a hundred and fifty years. The driving force behind this—whose hard work, self-sacrifice, and relentless struggle gifted theatre lovers with a stage of their own—was Girish Ghosh. And the disciple of this great actor was Shrimati Binodini Dasi. She had emerged from the dark alleys of a despised, outcast life, carrying in her heart the dream of becoming a theatre actress. She could never imagine her existence without the theatre. Indeed, she is the very synonym for self-sacrifice and pride, for success and self-reproach. The story of her contribution to the Bengali stage, alongside the profound grief and lamentations of her personal life, can be gathered from her own autobiography, Amar Katha, and several other sources. It is these very conflicts and turning points that form the core theme of the play Rangaloke Binodini.
